Visitors looking to get off the beaten path might enjoy Torre Camigliati, a restored 18th-century baronial hunting lodge set in extensive, idyllic grounds and run by descendants of the original owners, the Barracco family. It’s part cultural space (offering walking and historical itineraries through the region, permanent in-house exhibitions and a nearby museum, La Nave della Sila), and part literary centre, celebrating the visions of “grand tour” travellers from the 18th to the 20th centuries, especially Norman Douglas, author of the 1915 account Old Calabria. Torre Camigliati also offers rooms and self-service apartments, and makes a great base from which to explore the area.
